Experience
In September 2007, I started tutoring. At this time, I started tutoring to help my mother. She had her own tutoring business and had an overflow of students. So, as a freshman in high school, I started tutoring elementary schoolers for reading and math. Then, during my junior year, I started tutoring on my own. Since then, I have kept up my small private tutoring business. I keep around ten students consistently throughout the year. I have two forms of tutoring. I do private, one-on-one tutoring as well as group tutoring. Private tutoring is just as it sounds: I work one-on-one with the students. For my group tutoring, I take up to four students at a time and work with them together. During the school year, I am helping the students succeed in the math class that they are in by helping them get through homework and by working on test corrections with them. For all of my students, I stay in contact with both the students' parents and their teachers. I also check PowerSchool to check their grades and make sure they are turning in homework. My students know that I am always available to them. If they are really struggling with a concept, but it is not a tutoring day, they know that I am a phone call or a text message away. It is not unusual for me to receive a picture text with a message saying that they really need help with this problem or topic. I then call them and we work out the problem together. Tutoring has taught me a lot about teaching and how I hope to teach. By tutoring, I have worked with students struggling with mathematics for years. This allows me to find different ways to explain things so that the math "clicks" for them. It has also helped me solidify my knowledge of the high school math content. I have been tutoring Algebra and Geometry since the year I took the classes, so I have never forgotten how to factor or prove triangles congruent! However, the one thing that tutoring has helped me most with has been my questioning techniques. When you are tutoring and working through a problem with a student, you want them to be able to get to the answer on their own without depending on you. Thus, you have to ask certain questions if the students are struggling. This is the same in the classroom, and I would not have the questioning techniques that I do today if I had not been tutoring for so long. If I had never been a mathematics tutor, I would not be the teacher that I am today.
